Vanilla Cinnamon Milk Tea Recipe
A creamy, cozy milk tea with black tea, cinnamon, vanilla, and your favorite sweetener, ready in just 10 minutes.
Equipment
- Small Pot
- Serving mug
Ingredients
- 2 black tea bags English Breakfast or Assam
- 1 cup boiling water
- ½ cup whole milk or milk alternative
- 1 cinnamon stick or ½ teaspoon ground cinnamon
- ½ teaspoon pure vanilla extract
- 1-2 tablespoons honey or maple syrup or sugar
- Pinch of salt
Instructions
- Steep the tea bags and cinnamon stick in the boiling water for 5 minutes to build a strong tea base. You want the tea to look deep reddish-brown and smell warm and spicy, not pale and timid.
- While the tea steeps, warm the milk in a small pot over medium-low heat for about 3 to 4 minutes, until it is steaming but not boiling. Look for tiny bubbles around the edge of the pan and a little steam rising from the surface. If it starts bubbling hard, pull it back. Boiled milk can taste a bit off, and honestly, it ruins the vibe.
- Remove the tea bags and cinnamon stick, then pour the steeped tea into your serving mug. At this point, the tea should smell strong enough that you know the milk will not wash it out.
- Add the warmed milk to the tea and stir well until the drink is fully combined and creamy tan in color. That color cue helps a lot. Too dark means your tea may be a touch aggressive, and too pale means you will want a stronger steep next time.
- Stir in the vanilla extract, sweetener of choice, and pinch of salt. Taste and adjust the sweetness or spice as desired. I like to pause here for one sip before serving, because this is where the balance really shows up.
- Serve hot right away, or let it cool and pour it over ice for an iced version. If you want, dust a little ground cinnamon on top for a cozy finish.
Notes
Flavor Tip: Assam gives the boldest, maltiest tea flavor, while English Breakfast is a balanced option that still stands up well to milk and spice.
Texture Tip: A cinnamon stick gives a smoother infusion and a clearer drink. Ground cinnamon adds stronger spice faster, but it can make the tea cloudier and leave sediment in the mug.
Milk Tip: Warm the milk gently until steaming, not boiling. This helps keep the flavor smooth and reduces the chance of curdling when it meets the hot tea.
Variation: For a subtle citrus note, add a small strip of orange zest while the tea steeps, but keep it light so the vanilla and cinnamon stay in front.
Make Ahead: You can make a tea-and-cinnamon concentrate in advance, chill it, and add the milk, vanilla, sweetener, and salt fresh when serving for the best flavor and texture.
Storage: Tea concentrate can be kept in the fridge and used while it still smells fresh and tastes bright. Fully mixed milk tea can also be refrigerated, but it is best soon after mixing.
