Equipment

  • Blender
  • Medium saucepan
  • Fine-mesh sieve or nut milk bag

Ingredients

  • 1 cup fresh turmeric, cleaned and chopped
  • 0.5 cup fresh ginger, cleaned and chopped
  • 4 cups water
  • 0.5 cup honey
  • 0.25 cup fresh squeezed lime juice, from 2-3 limes

Instructions

Blend for Extraction

  • Add the turmeric, ginger, and water to your blender and process until the mixture is intensely orange and completely smooth with no remaining chunks.
  • Pour the blended mixture into a medium saucepan and set it over medium-high heat until it reaches a boil.

Simmer to Infuse

  • As soon as the liquid boils, reduce the heat to maintain a gentle simmer for 15 minutes, allowing the color to deepen and the flavors to meld.

Sweeten and Brighten Off the Heat

  • Remove the saucepan from the heat and stir in the honey and fresh lime juice while the tonic is still warm so the honey dissolves easily.

Strain, Chill, and Serve Your Way

  • Strain the mixture through a fine-mesh sieve into a bowl or pitcher, pressing gently to extract all the liquid. For an ultra-smooth finish, use a nut milk bag.
  • Pour the jamu into a glass bottle and refrigerate until chilled.
  • Serve chilled, at room temperature, or warm. Add a pinch of black pepper and a teaspoon of coconut oil to each serving to support absorption.

Notes

Fat-Activation Method: Whisk in 1 teaspoon of virgin coconut oil while the jamu is warm to support curcumin bioavailability and create a silkier mouthfeel.
The Steaming Trick: Steam the roots for 20 minutes before blending to soften fibers and create a rounder, easier to strain flavor profile.
Window of Potency: Consume the juice within 5 to 7 days for the brightest flavor and most stable active compounds.
Stain Prevention: Rinse blender parts and tools immediately with warm, soapy water. Use oil to lift any stubborn yellow turmeric pigment from surfaces.
