Mixing Bowl
Spatula
- 2 cans strawberry pie filling ((21 ounce cans))
- 2 cups fresh sliced strawberries ((about 1 pint))
- 8 ounces cream cheese ((softened))
- 1 large egg
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- ¼ cup white sugar
- 1 box vanilla cake mix (15.25 ounce)
- 12 tablespoon melted, salted butter
Heat the oven to 350°F. Have the 9x13-inch baking dish ready before assembling the layers.
Spread both cans of strawberry pie filling across the bottom of the baking dish. Cover the base evenly so every scoop gets a saucy berry layer.
Gently fold the fresh sliced strawberries into the pie filling. The berries should stay visible throughout the filling rather than being crushed.
Beat the softened cream cheese, white sugar, egg, and vanilla extract in a mixing bowl with a hand mixer until smooth. The mixture should look creamy and thick, with no firm cream cheese clumps.
Spoon the cream cheese mixture over the berry layer and smooth it gently where possible. Small gaps are fine because the filling settles as the dessert bakes.
Scatter the vanilla cake mix evenly over the cream cheese layer. Carry the dry mix all the way to the dish edges without pressing or stirring it down.
Drizzle the melted salted butter over the cake mix. Some dry areas may remain at first, but the butter and fruit steam will spread through the topping in the oven.
Bake uncovered for 45 to 50 minutes, then rest for 10 to 15 minutes before serving. The cake is ready when the top is golden brown and the berry layer bubbles around the edges.
Texture tip: Rest the dessert for 10 to 15 minutes before serving so the warm berry juices and cream cheese layer settle into neat scoops.
Troubleshooting: If dry cake mix patches remain near the end of baking, dab exposed powder lightly with extra melted butter and return the dish to the oven until golden.
Storage: Because the custard layer contains cream cheese and egg, cool completely, cover tightly, and refrigerate leftovers promptly.
