Cranberry Sauce Made Easy with Fresh Flavor Boost

Real Cranberry Sauce

Rebecca Blumer
This cranberry sauce is a fresh, tangy, and vibrant upgrade from the canned version. With natural pectin from the berries, it thickens without artificial ingredients, and the balance of citrus, spice, and sweetness makes it a showstopper on any holiday table.

Equipment

  • Saucepan

Ingredients

Cranberry Sauce Base

  • 12 oz fresh or frozen cranberries no need to thaw if frozen
  • 3/4 cup granulated sugar adjust to taste
  • 1/2 cup orange juice fresh is best
  • 2 tbsp water prevents scorching at the start
  • 1 tsp orange zest finely grated
  • 1/4 tsp kosher salt
  • 1/4 tsp ground cinnamon optional but lovely
  • 1/8 tsp ground ginger or allspice optional for warmth
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract optional, adds roundness
  • 1–2 tbsp maple syrup or honey optional for depth and glossy finish

Instructions

  • Rinse and pick the berries. Discard any soft or shriveled cranberries.
  • In a medium saucepan, combine orange juice, water, sugar, salt, and spices. Stir over medium heat until sugar dissolves.
  • Add cranberries. Increase heat to medium-high. When berries start popping, reduce to a steady simmer.
  • Simmer for 8–12 minutes, stirring occasionally, until about two-thirds of the berries have burst and the liquid has thickened.
  • Remove from heat. Stir in orange zest and vanilla extract (if using). Adjust sweetness and salt to taste.
  • Let sauce cool in the pan for 20–30 minutes, then transfer to a serving bowl. Chill at least 2 hours for best texture.
  • Serve chilled or at cool room temperature. Stir before serving for glossy consistency.

Notes

Make-ahead friendly: Store in the fridge up to 10–14 days or freeze up to 3 months. Great with turkey, chicken, pork, or as a spread on sandwiches. Customize with different spices or sweeteners as preferred.
