- ¾ cup lemon juice fresh squeezed (about 5 - 7 lemons)
- ¾ cup sugar
- 6 cups water
- ⅓ cup prickly pear syrup
- Ice
- Lemon slices for garnish
Pour the water and sugar into a large pitcher, then stir until the sugar disappears completely. The mixture may look a little cloudy at first, then turn clear as the sugar dissolves.
Add the fresh lemon juice and prickly pear syrup to the pitcher, then stir until the color is even throughout. The lemonade should turn a bright pink or magenta shade with no darker streaks of syrup left at the bottom.
Taste the lemonade and adjust if needed with a bit more sugar or lemon juice. You want a balance where the tart lemon hits first and the fruity sweetness follows.
Add ice and lemon slices to the pitcher if you want to chill and serve it right away. The lemon slices make the drink look fresh and add a little extra citrus aroma as it sits.
Pour into glasses over ice and finish each one with a slice of lemon. Serve while very cold for the brightest, most refreshing flavor.
Perfect Balance: For the best flavor, taste the lemonade after mixing but before adding ice. This allows you to easily adjust the sweetness or tartness by adding more sugar or lemon juice.
Make-Ahead & Storage: You can store the lemonade in a covered pitcher in the refrigerator for up to 3-4 days. For the best taste and to prevent dilution, add ice and lemon slices just before serving.
Recipe Variations: For a cocktail, add a shot of vodka, gin, or blanco tequila to your glass. For a sparkling version, top each glass with club soda or sparkling water right before serving.
