Add the oats, milk, and any selected add-ins and flavor ingredients to a large glass container, then stir until evenly blended. The mixture should look loose and milky, with no chia seed clumps stuck along the bottom or sides.
Cover the container with a lid or plastic wrap and refrigerate it for at least 2 hours or overnight. After a longer chill, the oats should look thicker and more cohesive, like a soft pudding rather than cereal in milk.
Remove the cover and stir the chilled oats before eating, adding a little more milk or water if desired. A properly chilled jar should offer gentle resistance to the spoon while still feeling creamy.
Texture adjustment: If the oats feel too thick after chilling, stir in a splash of milk or water right before serving. If they seem too loose, give them more time in the refrigerator to fully hydrate.
Chia seed handling: Stir the ingredients thoroughly when combining, making sure to scrape the bottom corners of the container so the chia seeds do not form dense gel pockets.
Crunchy toppings: Keep crisp elements like nuts, granola, or sliced bananas separate until serving to preserve their texture and freshness.
