Cocktail shaker
Microplane or grater
- 1 teaspoon matcha powder ceremonial or culinary grade
- 1 ounce hot water
- 2 ounces almond milk
- 1 ½ ounce gin
- 1 ounce amaretto liqueur
- ice
- nutmeg
Chill a clean coupe glass in the freezer or refrigerator for a brief few minutes while you mix the drink. The glass should feel cold but not heavily frosted.
Whisk the matcha powder with the hot water in a small bowl or cup until completely smooth, using a bamboo whisk, fork, or milk frother. You’re looking for a lump-free green mixture with a little light foam on top.
Pour the prepared matcha into a cocktail shaker, then add the almond milk, gin, and amaretto. The mixture should look evenly green before the ice goes in.
Fill the shaker about halfway with ice, seal it, and shake hard for about 8 seconds. Stop when the shaker feels very cold in your hands and the drink is nicely aerated.
Strain the cocktail into the chilled coupe, aiming to keep as much of the foam as possible. The surface should look smooth and lightly frothy.
Grate nutmeg over the top and serve right away. The aroma should be warm and spicy against the cool, creamy drink.
Expert Tip: For the smoothest texture, use hot, not boiling, water to dissolve the matcha powder completely before adding it to the shaker.
Silky Finish: For an even smoother drink, double strain the cocktail through a fine-mesh sieve to catch any ice shards or stubborn matcha bits.
Serving Suggestion: This cocktail is best served fresh in a chilled coupe glass. The cold glass keeps the drink crisp and makes the texture feel more polished.
Make-Ahead Tip: You can combine the liquid ingredients in advance and keep the mixture chilled. Shake each serving with ice right before pouring so the drink stays cold and foamy.
