Hugo Spritz Mocktail

Rebecca Blumer
A quick, floral, and bubbly mocktail made with mint, elderflower, and non-alcoholic sparkling wine. This crisp and refreshing drink feels fancy but takes just 2 minutes to prepare with almost no effort.

Equipment

  • A large Spritz glass
  • A muddler
  • Jiggers or measuring spoons

Ingredients

  • 8 mint leaves
  • 1.5 oz non-alcoholic elderflower cordial or liqueur
  • 3 oz non-alcoholic Prosecco or alternative
  • 1 oz soda water or plain seltzer
  • fresh lemon slice and mint Optional garnishes

Instructions

  • Add the mint leaves and elderflower cordial or liqueur to a large spritz glass, then press the mint very lightly with a muddler or the handle of a wooden spoon. The leaves should look bruised and fragrant, not shredded or dark.
  • Fill the glass with ice, then pour in the non-alcoholic Prosecco or alternative followed by the soda water or plain seltzer. You should hear a lively fizz, and the glass should look bright and bubbly right away.
  • Stir gently, taste, and add a little more elderflower only if you want a sweeter finish, then garnish and serve. The final drink should taste floral, crisp, and cooling, with the mint staying fresh rather than grassy.

Notes

Perfect Mint Flavor: To avoid a bitter taste, muddle the mint leaves very gently. You only need to bruise them enough to release their aroma, not shred them. Alternatively, you can clap the mint leaves between your palms before adding them to the glass.
Chill Everything: For the best results, use chilled ingredients (elderflower, sparkling wine, soda water) and a chilled glass. This keeps the mocktail crisp and prevents the ice from melting too quickly and diluting the drink.
Taste and Adjust: The sweetness of elderflower cordials and the dryness of non-alcoholic sparkling wines can vary. Taste your mocktail before serving and adjust if needed. You can add more elderflower for sweetness, a squeeze of lemon for brightness, or a splash more soda water to lighten it.
Make-Ahead & Storage: This drink is best enjoyed immediately to preserve its fizziness. You can prepare the components in advance (wash mint, slice garnishes) but should only mix the final drink right before serving.
