Equipment

  • 9-inch square pan

Ingredients

  • ½ cup butter or margarine
  • 1 cup graham cracker crumbs finely crushed (about 7 full graham crackers)
  • 1 cup sweetened flaked coconut
  • 1 cup semi-sweet chocolate chips
  • 1 cup chopped pecans or walnuts
  • 14 ounces sweetened condensed milk

Instructions

  • Heat the oven to 350°F, line a 9-inch square pan with parchment overhang, and melt the butter in the pan. Coat the bottom evenly so the graham crumbs can absorb the butter and form a cohesive crust.
  • Scatter the graham cracker crumbs over the melted butter, then add the coconut, chocolate chips, and chopped pecans or walnuts in that order. Keep the layers fairly even so every square gets chocolate, coconut, and crunch.
  • Pour the sweetened condensed milk across the top and bake for 30 minutes. Look for golden-brown coconut edges and a center that feels set but still yields slightly when pressed gently.
  • Let the bars cool completely in the pan, then lift them out with the parchment and cut into squares. Wipe the knife clean between cuts for tidy edges instead of crumbly, dragged corners.

Notes

Pan prep: Line the pan with parchment paper, leaving overhang on two sides, so you can easily lift the cooled bars out before slicing.
Crust tip: Press the graham cracker crumb layer down firmly with the bottom of a measuring cup to form a sturdy base that stays together when cut.
Slicing tip: Cool completely before cutting, and wipe the knife clean between cuts for neat, sharp edges without crumbling.
Storage: Keep cooled bars in an airtight container with parchment between layers in a cool spot, or chill them for firmer cuts.
