Equipment

  • Small pan
  • Medium bowl
  • Heart-shaped cookie cutter
  • Cookie sheet
  • Wire cooling rack

Ingredients

  • 1 pouch (17.5 oz) Betty Crocker™ Chocolate Chip Cookie Mix
  • 1/4 cup Gold Medal™ all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 cup butter or margarine, softened
  • 1 egg
  • Cooking spray

Instructions

Brown the Butter, Then Bring It Back to Softened

  • Melt the butter or margarine in a small pan over medium heat. Continue cooking until it foams and shifts from pale yellow to a golden amber color with a toasted aroma.
  • Immediately pour the browned butter into a bowl to stop the cooking process. Let it cool until it reaches room temperature (about 65°F), appearing soft and scoopable rather than liquid.

Mix the Dough and Preheat the Oven

  • Preheat your oven to 375°F to ensure a steady heat for clean cookie edges.
  • In a medium bowl, stir the cookie mix, all-purpose flour, cooled browned butter, and egg until the mixture forms a uniform, pliable dough. If it feels too sticky, let it sit for two minutes to hydrate.
  • Roll the dough into consistent 1 1/4-inch balls to ensure even baking across the tray.

Shape the Hearts and Bake

  • Lightly coat a heart-shaped cookie cutter with cooking spray and place it on an ungreased cookie sheet. Press one dough ball into the cutter until even, then lift the cutter straight up. Repeat this process, spacing the cookies 2 inches apart.
  • Bake for 6 to 8 minutes. Remove them from the oven when the edges are light golden brown but the centers still look slightly underdone.

Cool Just Enough to Set the Shape

  • Allow the cookies to rest on the baking sheet for 2 minutes to firm up the heart shapes.
  • Carefully transfer the cookies to a wire rack to finish cooling completely.

Notes

The Cookie Scoot: For professional, razor-sharp edges, place the heart cutter around the cookies immediately after they come out of the oven and gently nudge the edges inward while they are still soft.
Glossy Chocolate Tops: Press a few additional semi-sweet chocolate chips into the tops of the shaped dough before baking to create attractive melted pools of chocolate on the surface.
Storage Tip: Keep cookies in an airtight container for up to 5 days. Place a slice of white bread in the container to help the cookies maintain their soft, chewy texture.
