Equipment

  • 1 3/4-quart baking dish
  • Small skillet
  • Aluminum Foil

Ingredients

  • 1/2 teaspoon olive oil
  • 1/2 small onion, sliced
  • 1 1/4 cups long grain rice
  • 1 (14.5 ounce) can beef broth
  • 1 (10.5 ounce) can French onion soup
  • 1 stick unsalted butter, sliced into pats

Instructions

Prep the oven and build aroma

  • Preheat your oven to 350 degrees F (180 degrees C) and prepare a 1 3/4-quart baking dish.
  • Heat the olive oil in a small skillet over medium-high heat. Add the sliced onions and sauté for approximately 5 minutes until they become golden and caramelized.

Assemble the casserole

  • Place the dry long grain rice into the baking dish. Pour in the beef broth and the condensed French onion soup, stirring thoroughly to ensure the rice is evenly moistened.
  • Stir in the caramelized onions, then distribute the butter pats evenly across the top of the mixture.

Bake until tender

  • Seal the dish tightly with aluminum foil and bake for 45 minutes to allow the rice to steam and absorb the savory liquid.
  • Remove the foil and return the dish to the oven for an additional 10 minutes until the rice is perfectly tender and the top appears glossy and bubbling.

Notes

Rice Fluffiness Tip: Rinse your long grain rice under cold water until it runs clear before baking. This removes surface starch and ensures the grains stay separate and fluffy rather than clumping together.
Steam Secret: To avoid crunchy or undercooked rice, ensure your aluminum foil is crimped tightly around the edges of the baking dish. A proper seal creates a sauna-like environment essential for hydration.
Flavor Upgrade: For a more concentrated and professional finish, substitute the beef broth with beef consommé. It provides a deeper umami punch and a richer mouthfeel.
